Waaler Farm is the name we choose for our riding centre at tararps byväg 135, in Asarum. Sweeden. This where we, Helene and Per Waaler, together with our children, Lise-Lotte and Per Niklas, have settled down after first having started working together in Los Angeles, California. We later moved to Norway, and for the next 20 years were creating Skauen Riding centre. We train horses, our own as well as others, for competitions and sale, and also instruct dressage and jumping students. After many years in the horse business, we have arrived at a way of training horses that has become an integral part of our lives. We wish that all dealing with horses, and training of dressage, should be done as much as possible on the horses terms, and not being affected by either economic goals or the pressure and stress of competition. Having, mentioned this, we still like to compete, but as stated, without lowering our view of respect for these fantastic animals, who let us put our foot in the stirrup, even knowing the job we are going to ask of them. This is not meant as a critique of others, but simply states an ethical choice that we have taken, for better or for worse. From this way of thinking we try as much as possible to get the horse to choose the road that we want it to take, with the conviction that what the horse chooses to do, it will do better than what it is forced to do. Comfortable bitts and saddles are minimum criteria. Also the physical and mental well being (from teeth to muscles, with as little stress as possible) is of a large consequence. Then comes the scales of training and sets guidelines for how, and in which order different qualities and goals should be achieved. The horse should be relaxed in its relation to the rider, and let the riders aids come through. Not because there are negative consequences for it not to give in, but because we, through example, show them we are worthy of their trust, and thereby get the opportunity to lead them towards our goal: balance together, like a pair of dancers.
